What to drink on a keto diet
We have gone through what you should eat when on a keto diet but you should not forget that many of the calories that you get into your body every day come from what you drink on a keto diet. It is sometimes easy to forget just how much carbohydrates there is in soda, milk and other things you drink. It can therefor sometimes to be hard to know what you can actually drunk on a keto diet or other low carb diets.
As a simple rule that you could always start out with. Water should be your primary drink on a keto diet. Whenever you are thirsty, have a glas of water. If you need something together with your food, have a glas of water. Water is simply the base of what you should drink on a keto diet (or any other diet). If you would like some taste when drinking your water you can add a few drops of lemon, but try to avoid it if you can. One of the main advantages with water compared to drink full with carbohydrates is the health benefits.
Carbonated water could also be good to drink when on a keto diet but be careful of the flavored varieties that have started to appear in recent years. Many of these contain different sweetener or fruit juice so be sure to read the ingredients before you drink it.
If you previously was used to drinking different kinds of soda, it is best to quit instead of choosing light variations since they usually are sweetened with sweeteners. Sweeteners are not very beneficial for the body, and it can make it difficult to get rid of your need for other sweet things. It is better to just directly quit drinking soda instead of cutting down on it part by part.
Milk contains a low amount of carbohydrates per 100g (around 5% for standard milk) so many people think it is okay to drink milk on a keto diet. however be aware that the total amount of carbohydrates is quite high. 5% carbohydrates means that 1 cup of milk contains 5 grams of carbohydrates. A large glass of milk then becomes almost as many carbohydrates as you would normally eat in a whole day if you want to lose weight.
If you are a coffee or tea drinker and is used to have a sip of milk in your coffee or tea then you should also try to remove this from your daily routine. If you really need to put something in your coffee or tea then it is a better option to add some fat cream instead of milk.
Coffee and tea you can drink as much as you want on a keto diet. Coffee contains a very small amount of carbohydrate. It is so small so you do not really need to worry about it. Tea usually contains no carbohydrate at all. There is however some types of tea that contains some carbohydrates so try to check it before you have some.
Juice and fruit juice should be avoided as they both contain high levels of carbohydrates. The carbs in juice mainly come in the form of fructose. There are some juices that claim they are low on carbohydrates. You should also avoid all these juices since in all of these cases they have added on other sweeteners which still are not good for you.
If you like to drink beer now and then you need to look into how serious you are with your keto diet. Beer is not recommended if you are on a keto low carb diet. Beer contains a lot of maltose, which is quickly absorbed by the body and 20-40% of the energy comes from carbohydrates.
Wine you can drink occasionally on a keto diet. It is however important that you do not to choose the sweet wines. If you are very strict with your keto diet you should also avoid Wine totally.
Some alcohol drinks could be okay on a keto diet if you choose varieties that are not sweetened. Vodka is one example of an alcoholic drink that contains 0% carbohydrates. Alcohol intake may disturb the weight loss so if you are really serious with your keto low carb diet you should stay away from all kinds of alcoholic drinks.
